What are physical hazards?

Physical hazards are factors in the work environment that can cause harm to the human body. They can arise from the work equipment, tools, or the environment in which work is performed. Physical hazards can include:

  • Slip, trip and fall hazards: These are hazards that can cause slips, trips, and falls, which can lead to injuries like broken bones or sprains.
  • Struck by hazards: These are hazards that involve being hit by objects or materials, such as falling objects or moving equipment.
  • Caught in or between hazards: These are hazards that involve being caught in or between equipment or machinery, which can cause serious injuries or death.
  • Electrical hazards: These are hazards that involve exposure to electricity, which can cause electric shock, burns, or electrocution.
  • Noise hazards: These are hazards that involve exposure to excessive noise, which can cause hearing damage and other health problems.
  • Radiation hazards: These are hazards that involve exposure to ionizing or non-ionizing radiation, which can cause cancer and other health problems.
  • Vibration hazards: These are hazards that involve exposure to vibration, which can cause hand-arm vibration syndrome and other health problems.
  • Temperature hazards: These are hazards that involve exposure to extreme temperatures, which can cause heat stress or hypothermia.
  • Ergonomic hazards: These are hazards that involve poor posture or repetitive motions, which can cause musculoskeletal disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome and back pain.
  • To reduce the risks associated with physical hazards, it’s important to identify and assess the hazards, and then take steps to control or eliminate them. This may involve implementing engineering controls (e.g., installing guards or barriers), administrative controls (e.g., developing policies and procedures), and providing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Additionally, regular training and awareness campaigns can help workers understand the hazards associated with physical hazards and how to work safely.
